The lifespan of a swimming pool cover depends on its material, exposure to sunlight and chemicals, water chemistry, frequency of operation and how well it is maintained.
For automatic pool covers, the mechanical system itself can often remain in service for many years with proper maintenance and replacement of wear components. The vinyl cover fabric, however, is a wear item and normally needs replacement before the entire system does.
How Long Does Automatic Pool Cover Fabric Last?
In our experience servicing automatic pool covers throughout Northern California, approximately 5–7 years is a common service life for automatic cover fabric, although some covers last longer and others require replacement sooner.
The cover fabric is backed by a 7-year prorated manufacturer warranty. Because the warranty is prorated, the amount of warranty coverage generally decreases as the cover ages. Warranty terms, exclusions and coverage can vary by manufacturer and by the specific circumstances of the claim.
Water Balance Is a Major Factor in Cover Life
Proper pool water balance is one of the biggest factors affecting the lifespan of automatic pool cover fabric.
The underside of the vinyl is continually exposed to the environment immediately above the pool water. When pool chemistry is not properly balanced, the vinyl and other cover materials can be exposed to harsh chemical conditions that accelerate deterioration.
Improper water balance, excessive sanitizer levels or improperly added chemicals can contribute to:
Premature deterioration of the vinyl
Brittleness and stiffness
Discoloration and fading
Weakening of the fabric
Damage to stitching and other materials
Shortening of the cover’s usable life
A pool that is consistently out of balance can significantly reduce the lifespan of the cover—potentially by years.
A cover that might otherwise provide many years of service can deteriorate much sooner when repeatedly exposed to improper water chemistry.
This is why the age of a cover alone does not tell the entire story. Two covers installed at the same time can be in dramatically different condition several years later depending on water chemistry, sun exposure, maintenance and how they have been operated.
After adding chemicals to the pool, follow the chemical and cover manufacturer’s instructions regarding circulation and when it is appropriate to close the cover. Do not assume that closing the cover immediately after adding chemicals is safe for the vinyl.
Annual Maintenance Helps Protect Your Investment
Automatic pool cover manufacturers recommend regular maintenance, generally on a yearly basis, to help identify problems before they develop into larger and more expensive repairs.
An automatic pool cover is more than just the vinyl. The fabric, tracks, ropes or cables, pulleys, sliders, motor, mechanism and cover housing all work together as a system.
Annual preventive maintenance gives a trained technician an opportunity to inspect the:
Cover fabric and webbing
Tracks and track condition
Ropes or cables
Pulleys and sliders
Leading edge and attachment points
Motor and operating mechanism
Fasteners and other moving components
Cover box or vault
The Cover Box Needs Maintenance Too
The cover box is often overlooked because most of the mechanism is hidden from view.
Leaves, dirt, insects, standing water and other debris can accumulate inside the box over time. This debris can interfere with moving components, hold moisture around the mechanism and contribute to premature wear.
Cleaning debris out of the cover box should be part of regular yearly preventive maintenance.
Keeping the box clean also gives the technician a better opportunity to inspect the mechanism and identify developing problems that may otherwise remain hidden until the cover stops operating.
Yearly maintenance cannot guarantee that a component will never fail, but it can help identify wear and developing problems with the cover, tracks and mechanism before they become larger issues.
Age Is Not the Only Consideration
Signs that your cover may be approaching replacement include:
Cracking, stiffness or brittleness
Fraying along the edges or webbing
Separation around stitching
Holes or repeated tears
Significant fading or deterioration
Fabric becoming unusually thin
White reinforcement fibers becoming visible
Problems maintaining proper tension
Water leaking through the fabric
Fabric that is no longer considered safety-rated
Sun exposure, improper water chemistry, excessive chemical exposure, standing water, debris, toys or objects becoming rolled into the cover, lack of maintenance and frequent use can all affect lifespan.
An Older Cover May Still Open and Close—but That Doesn’t Necessarily Make It a Safety Cover
This is an important distinction.
Automatic pool cover fabric deteriorates as it ages. A cover that still moves across the pool should not automatically be assumed to retain its original safety characteristics.
ASTM F1346 establishes performance requirements for swimming pool safety covers intended to reduce drowning risk by inhibiting access to the water when the cover is correctly installed, used and maintained according to manufacturer instructions.
If you are uncertain about the condition of your automatic pool cover, Pacific Pool Covers can inspect the fabric and operating system and discuss whether repair, maintenance or replacement is appropriate.
In our experience servicing automatic pool covers across Northern California, about 5 to 7 years is common, although some covers last longer and others need replacement sooner.
The fabric is backed by a 7-year prorated manufacturer warranty. Because it is prorated, coverage generally decreases as the cover ages, and terms and exclusions vary by manufacturer and by the claim.
Manufacturers recommend regular maintenance, generally once a year. A technician inspects the fabric, tracks, ropes or cables, pulleys, motor and mechanism, and the cover box should be cleaned out as well.
Not necessarily. Cover fabric deteriorates with age, so a cover that still moves should not be assumed to keep its original safety characteristics. Pacific Pool Covers can inspect it and advise on repair, maintenance or replacement.
